Description
Are you Touch Starved or Touch Fulfilled?
‘We need 4 hugs a day to survive, 8 hugs a day for maintenance, and 12 hugs a day to thrive and grow.’
– Family Therapist, Virginia Satir
Additionally, research shows that it takes at least 20 seconds of sustained contact to release the oxytocin hormone. So that translates into just over a minute of contact to survive, 2.5 minutes of contact for maintenance, and 4 minutes of contact to thrive and grow.
The vast majority of us are lucky to get one hug a week, let alone TWELVE HUGS A DAY! Does that mean we’re destined to live a life starved of touch and the overall benefits it brings?
Not at all! The benefits of touch are well within reach for all of us, no matter our current circumstances.
Join me, Alex Alexander, Erotic Blueprint Coach™ and founder of InBody Your Life™, for Touch Games; a fun, educational, and experiential eCourse on ways you can fill your touch-bank whether you’re isolated, single, in a relationship, or some mix in between!
Over the course of this pandemic, more and more people are voicing their longing for connection with others. We’ve had to quickly confront the undeniable effects that isolating ourselves mentally, emotionally, and physically has revealed: The devastating impact of isolation and touch starvation.
Touch Starvation or Deprivation can show up in numerous ways, like:
- No longer enjoying touch,
- Easily overwhelmed by touch,
- Relationship issues as all forms of communication and connection break down,
- Health problems due to chronic stress and feelings of isolation,
- Frustration, anxiety, depression, and so much more.
But not all of us may be aware of this.
Regardless, we don’t have to be physically isolated from other people to feel lonely and starved of touch, affection and intimacy.
Many relationships have one or both partners hungry for touch.
This could be due to relationship conflicts, habits and patterns, or just not knowing how to ask your partner to give you touch in ways that you enjoy. You see, there are numerous ways to give and receive touch and if you have a partner who’s touch style matches you, you’ve got a great recipe for a touch, happy connection!
But if you have a partner who touches differently, or maybe isn’t very touch savvy at all, it can be incredibly disappointing, leading to physical distance as well as emotional distance,
But what about those that are single?
What about those that don’t have people around? Are you destined just to have affection and snuggles from your pets? While those are amazing and should be enjoyed, they’re not the only way you can fill your touch bank. The benefits of touch can also be found through self care practices and even self touch.
So what exactly ARE some benefits of touch?
- Boosting levels of the bonding hormone oxytocin,
- Lowering the stress hormone cortisol,
- Lower heart rate and blood pressure,
- Increasing immune system function and resilience,
- Deeper bonding between family, friends, and loved ones,
- Better communication and empathy,
- Better sleep, better digestion, and a calmer nervous system that leads to a greater sense of overall well being that permeates your physical, mental, and even spiritual health.
